110指考英文考科-36

[題組:第36-39題]Located in Black Canyon straddling the border between Nevada and Arizona in the southwestern region of the United States, Hoover Dam is named one of the Top 10 Construction Achievements of the 20th century. The dam, constructed between 1931 and 1936, was the largest of its kind at the time. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers and cost over one hundred lives.
Since about 1900, the Black Canyon and nearby Boulder Canyon had been investigated for their potential to support a dam that would control floods, provide irrigation water, and produce hydroelectric power. In 1928, the US Congress authorized the project. The winning bid to build the dam was submitted by Six Companies, Inc. However, such a large concrete structure had never been built before, and some of the techniques were unproven. The extreme summer heat and lack of facilities near the site also presented tremendous difficulties. Nevertheless, Six Companies turned over the finished dam to the federal government on March 1, 1936, more than two years ahead of schedule.
The initial design of the dam, which was more concerned with the dam’s functionality than its exterior, was criticized by many as being too plain and unremarkable for a project of such immense scale. So Gordon B. Kaufmann, the architect who was brought in to redesign the exterior, greatly streamlined the design and applied an elegant Art Deco style to the entire project. Allen Tupper True, an American illustrator, was also hired to handle the design and decoration of the walls and floors of the new dam. He integrated into his design the images and colors based on Native American visions of rain, lightning, clouds, and animals, thereby creating symbolic patterns which appear both ancient and modern.
Today, Hoover Dam has become a national historic landmark. Standing at more than 725 feet above the Colorado River, the highest concrete dam in the Western Hemisphere continues to draw crowds 85 years after its creation, attracting more than a million visitors a year.
36. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a reason for building the dam in the beginning?
(A) To promote tourism.
(B) To support agriculture.
(C) To generate electricity.
(D) To prevent natural disasters.

The phenomenon of master’s degree holders applying for waste collector positions has aroused wide concern, and several factors contribute to it. Firstly, the current job market is highly competitive. Many industries have limited vacancies, making it difficult for graduates to find jobs matching their academic backgrounds. Secondly, waste collector roles in some areas offer stable salaries and social security benefits, which are attractive to those seeking job security. Additionally, some master’s graduates may view this position as a temporary choice to gain work experience while waiting for better opportunities.

To cope with this competitive job market, I have made a detailed study plan for my college life. In terms of academic learning, I will focus on building a solid professional foundation by attending all core courses and participating in academic seminars related to my major, such as computer science. This will help me master key skills like programming and data analysis. Besides, I will gain practical experience by applying for internships in tech companies during summer vacations. For example, I plan to intern at a software development company to practice developing applications, which can enhance my employability. Moreover, I will learn additional skills like foreign languages and project management to make myself more competitive in the job market.。

Ongoing conflicts across the Middle East have prevented more than 13 million children from attending school, according to a report published by UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund.
The report states that 40% of all children across the region are currently not receiving an education, which is a result of two consequences of violence: structural damage to schools and the displacement of populations, also called “forced migration.”” Both issues result from the tide of violence that has crossed the region in recent years. The report examines nine countries where a state of war has become the norm. Across these countries, violence has made 8,500 schools unusable. In certain cases, communities have relied on school buildings to function as shelters for the displaced, with up to nine families living in a single classroom in former schools across Iraq.
The report pays particularly close attention to Syria, where a bloody civil war has displaced at least nine million people since the war began in 2011. With the crisis now in its fifth year, basic public services, including education, inside Syria have been stretched to breaking point. Within the country, the quality and availability of education depends on whether a particular region is suffering violence.
The report concludes with an earnest request to international policymakers to distribute financial and other resources to ease the regional crisis. With more than 13 million children already driven from classrooms by conflict, it is no exaggeration to say that the educational prospects of a generation of children are in the balance. The forces that are crushing individual lives and futures are also destroying the prospects for an entire region.
